Zachary Levi stars in the upcoming Warner Bros. superhero movie ‘Shazam!’ and now fans are getting an official release date!

The film will open April 5, 2019, the studio announced Friday. The month is currently pretty quiet at the box office, with Paramount’s ‘Pet Sematary remake opening a week after ‘Shazam!.’

Zachary stars as the adult superhero Captain Marvel, who is actually a young boy named Billy Batson (Asher Angel). Billy is able to transform into the hero by uttering the magic word “Shazam!” Mark Strong is in talks to play the film’s villain, with director David F. Samberg at the helm with a screenplay by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke.

During an interview at the ‘Justice League’ premiere after party, Levi expressed his enthusiasm to portray “a teenager in a super hero’s body.” He also mentioned he will be bulking up a considerable amount for the part and at the time was consuming about 4,000 calories per day in preparation.

Originally, the film was set to star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Shazam’s classic counterpart Black Adam. Johnson, however, is no longer a part of the film and will instead star in his own ‘Black Adam’ movie. Speaking about the change, Johnson said:

“I think they’ve got a great plan over there with him and I wish those guys the best of luck. We had to split the idea because the obviously idea was ‘Black Adam’ and ‘Shazam.’ So we split it. Those guys are gonna do great with it.”

Shazam first appeared on the pages of DC Comics in 1939 with the real name of Captain Marvel, created by C.C. Beck and writer Bill Parker.

Shazam!’ opens four months after the next DC film, Jason Momoa’s ‘Aquaman,’ which opens December 21 of this year. And, not one to take a back seat, Marvel will debut the fourth ‘Avengers’ film one month after ‘Shazam!’ on May 3, 2019.
