New Mutants

The Demon Bear is coming.

While no one involved with the film’s production has yet confirmed that the mystical menace will, in fact, serve as the villain of ‘The New Mutants’, each new teaser image seems to point ever more firmly in that direction. For those who might be unfamiliar with the original storyline, the Demon Bear is an antagonist connected to team member Danielle Moonstar’s past. Though the creature had been teased throughout the run of the series up to that point, the New Mutants found themselves face-to-face with it in a story that began in ‘New Mutants #19’. In addition to its narrative significance, that storyline also saw the arrival of artist Bill Sienkiewicz on the book. Sienkiewicz brought a surreal, horror-infused aesthetic to the title for a run that is still considered definitive some thirty years later.

With all of that in mind, it’s no surprise that ‘New Mutants’ director Josh Boone has described Sienkiewicz’s run on the comic as a major influence on his adaptation (and the proposed trilogy of horror inspired ‘X-Men’ movies to which he hopes it will lead). And that influence is clearly felt in the film’s latest teaser, which plays up the film’s presumed Sienkiewicz/Demon Bear connections.

The teaser, like many prior teasers for the film, falls somewhere between a clip and a “motion poster”. In it, we see Danielle lying on the ground amid falling snow – more of that classic Demon Bear imagery. The teaser was accompanied by a tweet promising that “Things will only get darker.”
