IT Pennywise

We’ve talked a bit about the numerous deleted scenes from this year’s ‘It’ remake, but the film also has its share of alternate material. In this case, we’re looking at an alternate opening of the sort that calls to mind a ‘How it Should Have Ended’ video. Which is to say that it’s fun, but was clearly never intended to make it into the finished film.

If you know the story of ‘It’, then you know the opening scene. Whether you came to the story through the novel or either of the film adaptations, young Georgie Denbrough’s run-in with Pennywise is going to be seared into your memory. This alternate opening takes that encounter and turns it on its ear. Let’s watch:

That last shot practically begs to have ‘Frolic‘ played over it, a la ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’, doesn’t it?

According to Pennywise actor Bill Skarsgard, this outtake came to be thanks to the particularly young age of Jackson Robert Scott, who plays Georgie. With that in mind, the cast and crew would often try to keep the experience of filming the famously grim scene light and playful.

“There was a big difference working with him as opposed to the other kid actors because they were early adolescent, you know twelve or thirteen, so they were closer to grown-up actors in terms of working experience than they were to kids. But Jackson, he was a proper kid.”

‘It’, directed by Andy Muschietti, stars Jaeden Lieberher, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Chosen Jacobs, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff, Nicholas Hamilton, and Bill Skarsgard. The film is set to receive Blu-ray and DVD releases on January 9th, 2018, and is available now on the usual array of digital platforms.

A sequel, tentatively titled ‘It: Chapter 2’ is due to arrive in theaters on September 6, 2019.
