WARNING: Spoilers ahead for anyone who SOMEHOW HASN’T SEEN ALL OF ‘GAME OF THRONES’ SEASON 7!

With new episodes of ‘Game of Thrones’ not set to premiere until 2019 (at least according to the latest news heard from star Sophie Turner), we are going to have to be content with any news we can get from Westeros, good or bad. And this one is a bit sad, as we now have confirmation that saving Jon Snow from the Night King and the Wights toward the end of Season 7 was indeed the last act in life of Benjen Stark.

According to the director of the episode, Alan Taylor, Benjen Stark is indeed dead following the events of the Season 7. In his words:

“He meets his end here.”

Now of course this is still ‘Game of Thrones’ and he did “die” in the presence of the Night King, and Benjen already seemed to be part-Wight by that point anyway, so we could still see the man again in the series? Will he be completely zombie by then and no longer the loving Uncle of Jon Snow and Bran who saved both of them from horrible fates during their adventures in the North?

In fact, he may be used to torment Jon Snow by the Night King who may realize how much Benjen meant to Jon, especially since Benjen sacrificed his own life to save his nephew. And Jon definitely had a strong connection to the man, as the argument could be made that part of why Jon joined the Night’s Watch was to follow in his Uncle’s footsteps. Either way, it means the Starks have one less ace in the hole against the Night King and are now almost entirely on their own without the previous generation’s help. This does raise the stakes for the final season and the fight against the White Walkers.
