For anyone wondering about the oddity in the new ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ trailer of both seeing Miles Morales seemingly talking to Peter Parker while also visiting a grave that appears to say “Peter Parker,” Collider seems to have it all figured out, and really, it makes a lot of sense when you think about. After all, the movie is called ‘Into The Spider-Verse,’ so the following theory is not that big a leap.
Anyways, the idea is that the story of the movie is going to begin in a world much like the one in which we originally met Miles Morales in the comics; where he watches Peter Parker/ Spider-Man die and then decides to take up the mantle to follow in the footstep of the fallen hero. And it would seem that at some point in the film, Miles is going to cross into a new dimension where Peter Parker/ Spider-Man is still alive and able to give him advice and work with him on the adventure of the movie, thus allowing fans to have their cake and eat it too, i.e. follow the original origin of Miles wherein he takes up the mantle of the fallen Spidey but also be able to have adventures with Peter as he does in later comics.
This goes along with statements given by the studios, as the original press release Sony Pictures Animation sent out for the film had said:
Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) falls through an alternate-universe New York City in Sony Pictures Animation’s ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.’
Which falls right in line with the Tweet the studio sent out with the trailer, which stated:
“Enter a universe where more than one wears the mask.”
Collider managed to connect a lot of these dots at the Comic-Con Experience (CCXP) in San Paulo, Brazil recently where the trailer was released and both Phil Lord and Chris Miller spoke on the new film, dropping some hints and facts about the movie, one of which was them stating that Peter is definitely in the movie and plays a “middle aged mentor to Miles,” though they were sure to explain that the movie is definitely a Miles Morales movie and Peter is simply passing the torch onto Miles.
They also confirmed the movie is a part of a multi-verse and not part of the live-action MCU ‘Spider-Man,’ talked about how the look and feel of the film was designed to make the audience feel like they were inside a comic book, how they wanted Peter to feel more adult than ever before, and how the movie is more action/adventure than comedy. They wanted to stress the theme that the movie is about regular people who make the choice to be heroes, not people who were born to be heroes.
All in all, this goes a long way in keeping me excited for ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,‘ and I cannot wait to see more footage, and for the completed movie.
