‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ is days away from release, and writer-director Rian Johnson is already preparing an entirely original ‘Star Wars’ trilogy that will focus on a new cast of principal characters. That is pretty much all he knows.
It does sound like his future films will bring back established characters from the ‘Star Wars’ universe. In a recent interview, Johnson spoke about his plans. He said:
“I’m just starting to think about it, and get into, so who knows? I want to keep it just totally wide open in terms of possibilities. That’s what’s so exciting about it right now, just the notion of one story, three movies, the sky’s the limit. We can really do anything. The possibilities are thrilling.”
‘Last Jedi’ hero and known ‘Star Wars’ fanboy John Boyega (Finn) suggested focusing this new story on Galen Marek, aka Starkiller from ‘The Force Unleashed’ video games. Johnson, however, entertained the idea of bringing back the big-eared Gungan that everyone loves to hate. Johnson said:
“I would be down with bringing old Jar Jar back — we’ll see.”
When asked if Jar Jar could make a comeback à la Mickey Rourke in ‘The Wrestler,’ Johnson replied:
“What if it was just in the style of ‘The Wrestler’ except it was Jar Jar? We’d shoot it in black and white.”

It would be an admittedly arduous task to come up with a brand new ‘Star War’ trilogy. When asked about the difficulty of such a project, Johnson replied:
“Right now it’s just excitement. It’s like the possibility of a brand new story, 3 movies, just go anywhere and tell anything, meet some new folks, see some new places. That to me, I mean just, in the ‘Star Wars ‘world? I’m like yeah, I’m bubbling with excitement about it.”
‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ opens on December 15.
