Adam Driver has confirmed that the title ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ is a nod to his character, Kylo Ren, as well as Daisy Ridley’s Rey. The relationship between the two, who came face to face for the first time in the film, is expected to be explored in the upcoming ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi.’

As the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa, Kylo Ren was on his way to becoming a Jedi under the guidance of Luke Skywalker before being tempted to the Dark Side by Supreme Leader Snoke. Inspired by his late grandfather Darth Vader, Kylo Ren effectively destroyed Skywalker’s new Jedi Order, joining the Knights of Ren and becoming a soldier for the First Order.

In a recent interview, Driver spoke of his character who is not fully a villain but is still in a place where he could go either way. Driver said:

“We find Darth Vader already completely committed; I was curious about starting with someone who was less together, who was starting in a place of self-doubt. The title of ‘The Force Awakens’ wasn’t just referring to the light side; it was the dark side as well.”

Though Kylo Ren was the clear villain of ‘The Force Awakens,’ it is uncertain whether the character will fully commit to the dark side. One popular fan theory guesses that the franchise will see Kylo and Rey switch places, with Rey on the path to the Dark Side while Kylo Ren finds himself on the road to redemption. The trailer for ‘The Last Jedi’ teased some kind of truce between Kylo and Rey, adding fuel to the theory’s fire.

As for Kylo Ren, the character truly could go either way despite his actions in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens.’ Much of the movie featured the character’s inner struggles to decide which side he wanted to be on.

Fans will have to wait and see when ‘The Last Jedi’ opens in theaters on December 15!
