black mirror

If you, like me, spent Thanksgiving avoiding talking to your relatives about politics by staring at your phone and thought that this might be the end of humanity, ‘Black Mirror’ is the show for you! The series originated on BBC but now streams on Netflix, where series creator Charlie Brooker was allowed more creative freedom, and as a result, came up with the series’ best episode so far, the hugely popular ‘San Junipero.’

In most episodes of the dark and futuristic series, Brooker and his creative team love to highlight all the negative attributes of social media, computing, gaming, and artificial intelligence, rather than taking full stock of the complex highs and lows of technological progress. The show’s themes center around praising traditionalism and nostalgia, which seems at odds with the detail and thoughtfulness given to its futuristic scenarios.

‘Black Mirror’ returns for its fourth season in 2018, and Brooker has brought in the big guns to direct and star in the upcoming episodes. Directors John Hillcoat (‘The Road’) and David Slade (NBC’s ‘Hannibal’) will each direct an episode, which will include performances by Jesse Plemons, Andrea Riseborough, Owen Teague, Georgina Campbell, and Rosemarie DeWitt. In fact, DeWitt gets the lead role in ‘Arkangel,’ the episode directed by Jodie Foster, which is the sole focus of the first trailer for ‘Black Mirror’ Season Four.

The official plot for ‘Arkangel’ seems tame for the series. A mother (DeWitt) agrees to have her daughter implanted with some sort of microchip following an abduction scare at their local playground. The assumption being that this does not turn out so great for those involved.

Producer Annabel Jones offered some in-depth details about the episode in an interview earlier this year. Jones said:

“This one’s like an indie movie set in blue-collar America, even though we filmed it in Canada. It follows a mother who has a young daughter and faces that perennial question of how to look after a child in an increasingly technical world; it taps into helicopter parenting… I always hope that whatever we tackle, it’s never on the nose and just more in the background but this episode asks how do you be a responsible mother in a world in which you can be all-powerful and omnipresent? How do you exercise responsibility? How do you ensure you give your child independence in a world in which you can have a lot of control?”

This episode seems right on par with the theme of ‘Black Mirror.’ Check out the first trailer for season four below!
