We still don’t know much as to what Marvel’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘ will be up to when they return to ABC for their fifth season but we’ve recently heard that it will be both “surprising” and “thrilling”! The descriptions came from actor Clark Gregg who has always been one of the main focal points of the series as Agent Phil Coulson and recently shared these thoughts at New York Comic-Con 2017! He was part of a roundtable interview and was specifically asked if we’d see any tropes from prior science fiction shows which have taken place in space.
To respond to this, Gregg stated that:
“I grew up watching those shows – Star Trek, those things. I wouldn’t say that [season 5] is like that, but to have it really bridge into more the sci-fi, cosmic part of the Marvel [Cinematic] Universe in ways that will be surprising to people, it’s really thrilling.”
While we’ve learned that two alien races will be highly involved in the upcoming season, one of which is the Kree, it still is unclear as to what direction this will take the cast and crew. However, Marvel’s TV head Jeph Loeb did share a few hints at what is to come at the same roundtable:
“In previous seasons, the audience knows what’s going on. Like, for example, you knew who the Ghost Rider was, what the Ghost Rider was doing, he was running around and then S.H.I.E.L.D. had to catch up to that and go ‘Who is this guy? What’s going on with this guy? What’s happening?’ This year, which is something we’ve never done before, is boom! They’re in space, they don’t know where they are and the mystery of what is going to happen, the audience is going along with them on that. So as they learn, you learn. So it’s one of those things where you’re not catching up you’re actually with our agents on this adventure.”
I’m with the audience who has felt that the series has grown stronger the further it has come along and am completely willing to embrace this change of perspective. If they can keep up the type of delivery that fans have been enjoying than the added mystery might even help lure some casual viewers back.
