Warning! Potential spoilers for ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2’ lie ahead! If you don’t want to see them, throw an invisibility cloak on this article!
Warner Bros has announced that production has officially begun on the second film in the ‘Harry Potter’ spin-off series. The film is going by the working title of ‘Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them 2’ while we wait for the official name to be released. David Yates, who directed the last four ‘Harry Potter’ films as well as ‘Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them’ is returning to direct this movie as well.
David Sakurai (‘Iron Fist’) has been confirmed as one of the newest cast members. He will play Krall, an “ambitious and sulky henchman” of Gellert Grindelwald; a role that, as we know from the first film’s shocking twist, reverts from Colin Farrell to Johnny Depp in the sequel.
Sakurai is a Japanese-Danish actor and has been on the sidelines of several films for over a decade. However, Netflix’s Marvel Comics TV series ‘Iron Fist’ awarded him with a notable role in 2017 as the villain Scythe.
The announcement of production and the casting of Sakurai also brings with it several other casting confirmations. Eddie Redmayne is back in the lead role of Newt Scamander (fans girls rejoice!), while Katherine Waterston is Auror Tina Goldstein, Alison Sudol is Queenie, and Dan Fogler is Jacob Kowalski. If you, like me, cried your eyes out at the fate of dear muggle Jacob, this casting announcement should brighten your spirits!
Of course, I would be remiss not to mention Johnny Depp in the role of Gellert Grindelwald. Jude Law as Albus Dumbledore (the younger version, of course), Ezra Miller as Credence, Zoe Kravitz as Leta Lestrange, Callum Turner as Theseus Scamander, and Claudia Kim, whose character hasn’t been named, are also confirmed.
Also from the official announcement came the following details about the film’s storyline.
Queen J.K. Rowling wrote the screenplay for the film, which is set in 1927, a few months after Newt helped to expose and capture infamous Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. However, as anticipated, Grindelwald has made a dramatic escape and has been gathering more followers to his cause. The only one who might be able to stop him is the wizard he once called his dearest friend, Albus Dumbledore.
But Dumbledore will need help from the wizard who had foiled Grindelwald once before. This, of course, being Newt Scamander. The adventure will reunite Newt with Tina, Queenie, and Jacob, but will also test their loyalties as they face new perils in an increasingly dangerous and divided wizarding world.
The film will expand the wizarding world, moving from New York to London and eventually Paris. There will be some nods to the ‘Harry Potter’ stories that will delight fans of the books and film series.
The film will be released on November 16, 2018. Five films in all in the series are planned. Can we get Hermione’s Time Turner and make this happen a little quicker?
