Fox Searchlight has released a new red band trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s ‘The Shape of Water.’ The trailer gives those of us who couldn’t afford the air fare to the Venice Film Festival a clearer look than previous trailers at the mysterious aquatic man at the center of this Cold War story.
Doug Jones (‘Pan’s Labyrinth’, ‘Hellboy’, a ton of other cool things) plays the aquatic man, who appears to be a big, loving nod from del Toro to the creature from the ‘Black Lagoon.’ The aquatic man forms an unlikely relationship with Elisa (Sally Hawkins), a mute, lonely woman who cleans the top-secret government facility that houses the man, or “asset” as he is referred to in trailers.
Del Toro’s romantic fantasy, which also stars Michael Stuhlbarg (‘Doctor Strange’), Michael Shannon (‘Man of Steel’), Octavia Spencer (‘Hidden Figures’) and Richard Jenkins (‘Cabin in the Woods’), won the coveted Golden Lion in Venice earlier this month.
Deadline reporter Nancy Tartaglione was able to attend the screening of the film in Venice, and described it as a mix of “fantasy, romance, a B-movie thriller plot, old Hollywood style and more.” Tartaglione reported that:
“Shouts “of ‘Bravo!’ were accompanied by hoots and hollers. The film also elicited sobs of joy.”
This new trailer also conveys the film’s humor in more detail than the earlier official clip, with Elisa using sign language to convey some colorful language to Shannon’s character, a government official.
Fox Searchlight plans a December 8 domestic release for ‘The Shape of Water.’ Take a look at the trailer and see if it is something to put on your radar. I, for one, will watch anything that includes Doug Jones, so color me excited!
