Rumors have been flying over the past few months regarding former Doctor Who companion Jenna Coleman and whether she will be making an appearance in this year’s Christmas special. Fans have long speculated on the likelihood of Clara Oswald returning to say farewell to Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor.
We have since discovered that Coleman was approached to consider such a cameo, and Capaldi himself has hinted that his former companion could return to witness his final adventure.
While at a special Doctor Who panel during San Francisco Comic Con, Capaldi was asked by a young fan if Whovians would ever see Clara again. Taking a moment before answering to measure his words carefully, Capaldi replied:
“I think you may. I’LL see her again. You may see her again too. But I won’t tell. It’d spoil things. You may see her. She’s still there. Everyone in Doctor Who is still there.”
Before we get too wibbly-wobbly, it is important to remember that nothing has been confirmed by the showrunners. These comments could be taken as Capaldi simply speaking generally, and not ruling out a return for Coleman at some point in the series’ future. It could also be that he was speaking on the emotional connection all actors have to the show and not about a particular actor’s physical return.
However, given the context and content of his comments, and the fact that the show loves to bring back past companions to bid the departing Doctor adieu, it’s not too far-fetched to think that Capaldi was dropping hints for die-hard fans that they might have even more to look forward to in the upcoming Christmas special.
