kingsman game of thrones

HBO isn’t giving up without a huge bloody fight.  It’s the biggest hit in recent memory. ‘Game of Thrones’ may be winding up with next year’s eighth season, but that won’t be the last visit to Westeros, if the network has anything to say about it.  HBO is developing four separate prequel series set in George R.R. Martin‘s mystical land.  Very little is known at this point, but it has been made clear that none of these are direct spin-offs and none of the characters from ‘GoT’ will be featured.

Martin himself is developing one of these prequels with screenwriter and producer Jane Goldman, who has produced scripts for the fantasy ‘Stardust’, ‘Kickass’, ‘X-Men: First Class’ and ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’, ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children’ and ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’, its upcoming sequel ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’ and the already announced ‘Kingsman 3’.

Goldman discussed the ‘GoT’ program she is working on, giving some insight.  First of all, just because these are prequels that don’t directly connect to the main story of ‘Game of Thrones’, they may detail events that have been mentioned on the show or in the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ novels that inspired it.

Yeah, I think I can say if I was able to say what mine was — yeah, I think as a book reader or as someone who watched the series, you would say, “Oh, that! OK.” Yeah, it would be recognizable as a past event, but I think that’s probably as far as I can go.

Goldman had to hold her tongue quite a bit as she was asked for details.  When asked whether hers how would include supernatural elements or magical creatures, she seems to nervously respond:

Yeah, I mean those are things that exist in the universe that George has created and it’s certainly — that’s an aspect that I love so, umm, yeah. (laughs) I’m sure there’s an element of that in anything that’s being developed but, yeah, that’s — I guess so, yeah. I feel like I’m saying way too much! I can say absolutely nothing.

It’s not a given that any of the four prequels in development will be picked up by HBO, but Goldman indicated that HBO would ideally like to get a new series out “sooner rather than later,” but so far everything is still in the planning stages.  Though she has spent time with Martin and discussed various ideas, no actual writing has begun.

What do you think?  Are you into the idea of one or more prequels to ‘Game of Thrones’? After all, AMC managed another score with ‘Better Call Saul’ after its acclaimed smash ‘Breaking Bad’ ended.  Why not HBO?  What would you like to see in a prequel?  Is there anything sacred that you don’t want to see disturbed after ‘GoT’ ends?
