Galaxy Quest

A TV series based on the cult 1999 sci fi spoof ‘Galaxy Quest’ has been simmering for a few years now.  In 2015, Amazon picked it up, but there hasn’t really been any news since then.  But now comes word that comedian Paul Scheer is tackling the script, picking up from Robert Gordon, who co-wrote the screenplay for the film.  Mark Johnson, who produced the movie is on board for the show, which comes to us via Paramount Television.

Scheer stated:

“Without giving much away, I don’t think there has ever been a better time to continue the Galaxy Quest story with the explosion and popularity of sci-fi films in recent years.  To be able to create and be a part of this world is just mind-blowing, and I’m approaching this truly as what I’d like to see as a fan.”

Scheer, a graduate of the Upright Citizens Brigade is a familiar face, having starred on ‘The League’, ‘Children’s Hospital’, ‘Fresh Off the Boat’, ‘Veep’ and most recently ‘Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later’.  And he has starred in his own online comedy series like ‘Scheer-RL’ a spoof of MTV’s millennium-era phenomenon ‘TRL’ and ‘The ArScheerio Paul Show’.

Apparently, back in 2015, Amazon’s goal was to reunite the actual film cast including Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman for the show.  At the time, Tim Allen was starring on the sitcom ‘Last Man Standing’ but that has wrapped.  But sadly, Alan Rickman passed away in January of 2016 and the project was shelved until now.

The film’s cast also included Enrico Colantoni, Justin Long, Daryl Mitchell, Missi Pyle, Sam Rockwell, Tony Shalhoub and Robin Sachs as the monstrous Sarris.  It will be interesting to see if Paramount and Amazon can reassemble the cast for the series or if they will have to cast new actors.  After all, it has been 18 years since the film came out.  (That means it would now be a high school graduate/college freshman, in case you didn’t feel old enough.)

Hopefully, this won’t be another false start.  Are you interested in seeing ‘Galaxy Quest’ as a serialized adventure on Amazon?  Would you prefer the original cast or would you be okay with a new cast?
