judge dredd

You know what they say: don’t count your chickens before they hatch – but for fans of the 2012 feature film ‘Dredd,’ today’s news will certainly make them get excited about what could be coming our way featuring the futuristic titular Judge.

A TV series based on ‘Judge Dredd’ is currently in the works and attempting to find life after having fan and creative-team interest piqued.  Sadly, the series seems to be the result of a follow-up film to the original struck down as a feasible idea – but a well-made TV series could certainly be an effective avenue for the long-running British hero.

The show likely wouldn’t even see the light of a device screen for at least two years, but pre-production work is clearly happening, as evidenced by new concept art that has surfaced.  Feast your eyes on these two pieces by artist Jack Eaves:

The original ‘Dredd’ film screenwriter, Alex Garland, confirmed earlier this year that talks were indeed happening with the film’s star, Karl Urban:

“We have been in discussions with Karl about his possible involvement in ‘Judge Dredd: Mega-City One’ for some time. These conversations continue, but we’re keen, he’s keen – it’s just a case of us making sure this show is everything we want it to be. This needs to be done right – the fans deserve it. Our team is working hard on scripts for the first season, creating engaging multi-thread storylines, one of which will be Dredd’s, but others which take us into the wider world of Mega-City One.“

Urban, for his part, confirmed the mutual intent in a recent interview:

“I am in discussions with them about that. I told them that if they write the material and give Dredd something to do and give him a function, I will be there. I would love to.”

It certainly sounds like encouraging talk that Urban may continue to be “the Law” on-screen in the not-too-distant future!
