The 16th Annual Star Trek Las Vegas Convention is going to have a slew of information on ‘Star Trek: Discovery‘ spinoffs but we’ve got the initial details of a new novel and the cover of a tie-in comic to share with you today! We’re under two months from the Discovery warping into our homes and are learning a bit more about how they’ll be expanding this chapter of the ‘Star Trek’ saga.
We already knew about the comic book series which had been revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2017 which Mike Johnson is co-writing with series writer Kirsten Beyer. Beyer will make sure the characterization is true while Johnson has previously written Trek comics which are set in the Kelvin timeline of the newer films. On art we have Tony Shasteen who previously illustrated ‘Star Trek: Boldly Go.’ This new comic will have a focus on the major Klingons which will be introduced in the show.
This title will be released at some point in October from IDW Publishing.
As to the novel, we know that it is titled ‘Star Trek Discovery: Desperate Hours’ and is penned by David Mack to be released next month through Simon & Schuster. The synopsis of this book describes it as:
“Aboard the Starship Shenzhou, Lieutenant Michael Burnham, a human woman raised and educated among Vulcans, is promoted to acting first officer. But if she wants to keep the job, she must prove to Captain Philippa Georgiou that she deserves to have it.
She gets her chance when the Shenzhou must protect a Federation colony that is under attack by an ancient alien vessel that has surfaced from the deepest fathoms of the planet’s dark, uncharted sea. As the menace from this mysterious vessel grows stronger, Starfleet declares the colony expendable in the name of halting the threat. To save thousands of innocent lives, Burnham must infiltrate the alien ship. But to do so she needs to face the truth of her troubled past, and seek the aid of a man she has tried to avoid her entire life — until now.
September 26th, 2017 is the release date on this one. It seems clear that even more details on both of these will be made available over the weekend.
