Some exciting news for fans of the original ‘Stargate SG-1’: MGM is developing a 10-episode digital series titled ‘Stargate Origins’! The new series will revisit Elizabeth Hoffman’s character, Catherine Langford, as she embarks on an unexpected adventure to unlock the mystery of what lies beyond the Stargate in order to save Earth from unimaginable darkness. These 10-minute episodes will be available exclusively at Stargate Command, the subscription-based Stargate platform. MGM’s Digital Group and New Form will be co-producing the venture with Mercedes Bryce Morgan (‘Virtual Morality’) directing it with a script by Mark Ilvedson and Justin Michael Terry.

Even though this will be a short digital series, we’ll still have a bit of a wait as we only have a teaser trailer to share with you today as production isn’t set to start until August.

Speaking of the teaser, I’m sure you’ll want to check that out:

While the teaser doesn’t show much, it does seem like we’ll be getting a solid little adventure here. At least, for those who have a Stargate Command subscription.

According to the president of worldwide television distribution and acquisitions at MGM, Chris Ottinger:

“We saw a need for a definitive hub for the Stargate fan base to continue to enjoy news and content, both old and new. Stargate Command will open a new door for the community to celebrate and interact with all content in a way that has never been done before.”

With almost a quarter of a century of history behind this franchise, it makes sense to have a central location to not only celebrate the series but expand upon it.

President of digital and new platforms at MGM, Kevin Conroy added that:

“We’ve been eager to revisit the Stargate franchise, and create an all-new story that honors the founding mythos and gives loyal fans more mystery and adventure. We view Stargate Origins as a thank you to fans who have been keeping the spirit of the franchise alive for nearly 25 years. With the increasing popularity of digitally native content that can be streamed to any device, MGM is committed to the production of premium linear mid-form content and are proud to launch with Stargate Origins.”

The news came out during the Thursday night ‘Stargate’ panel and the idea of further fleshing out the ‘Stargate’ universe has me excited! Sadly, this still doesn’t close the books on any of the franchises or address how the upcoming film (if it hasn’t been canceled) would end up rebooting the entire series once again.
