We knew things were bad for ‘The Batman‘ when Ben Affleck took a step back from being the director but now rumors are once again swirling that after ‘Justice League’ he won’t be wearing the Cape and Cowl again. In fact, it sounds like he might not even be up for the part in ‘The Batman’. While Affleck was helping to promote ‘Justice League’ at San Diego Comic-Con 2017 he seemed to be in high spirits, but things might not all be well on Gotham.
Previously Warner’s chief Toby Emmerich had stated that “Ben is our Batman. We love him as Batman. We want to keep him in the cowl as long as we can.” However, sources familiar with the studio’s plans have them working to “usher out Affleck’s Batman — gracefully, addressing the change in some shape or form in one of the upcoming DC films.” With Affleck turning 45 this year he would be close to 50 when ‘The Batman’ came out and if Reeves’ plans for a trilogy pan out that could have Affleck in his mid to late 50’s by the time they’re done.
There are plenty of ways that the studio could do this. He could pass the mantle on to another hero or Robin as has been done multiple times in the comics. Other options would be that they write in the character of Ra’s al Ghul and the concept of the Lazarus Pits. A full on de-aging of Bruce Wayne could explain how a different actor takes over the part. The final option would be to have him too hurt to continue and give him a more of a mentor role as was seen was seen in the animated series ‘Batman Beyond.’
However, if they’re looking to phase him out that last option is likely off the table.
Are you sad to hear that Affleck seems to be on the outs in the DCEU before ‘The Batman’ is even ready to film? Which route do you feel they should go if they do already work on recasting this iconic character? Share your thoughts below!
