After this summer’s ‘Alien: Covenant,’ and the news that Neill Blomkamp’s long gestating ‘Alien 5’ film was cancelled, a lot of fans of the series have been wondering whether they were ever going to see Ellen Ripley in another ‘Alien’ film. While it seems like there is little chance for Sigourney Weaver herself to return to the world of ‘Alien’ while Ripley Scott is working on the prequel films, there might actually be some hope to see some version of Ellen Ripley, as confirmed by a recent Instagram post by a fan who was present with Ridley Scott and asking questions about the franchise.

While answering said fan’s question about Ripley, Scott had the following to say about the beloved character:

“Well we’re heading toward the back end of the first Alien so [using CG] may be feasible. Ripley’s going to be somebody’s daughter, obviously. We’re coming in from the back end. The time constraints of what’s the time between this film, where we leave David going off heading for that colony, I think you’re probably two films out from even considering her.”

Now for some, that might sound very intriguing, but for others, this might sound very confusing. Not too long ago Scott had mentioned a plan for around 6 of these prequel films leading up to the original ‘Alien,’ but if Ripley is that close to being considered, (and with the fact that ‘Alien: Covenant’ is set only about 18 years before the original) it sounds like the 6 film plan might not be what Scott is intending to do anymore. One thing that Scott has made pretty clear with the two prequel films released already is that he is far more interested in the mythology of the Xenomorphs and how they came to be than in the backstory of Ripley and her family, which leads me to think we may not even see her until the final movie he has planned, where she makes a brief cameo a la Princess Leia at the end of ‘Rogue One,’ just to link the prequels directly into the original ‘Alien.’

What are your thoughts on Scott’s plans for the series and Ripley? Are you disappointed that it seems like he does not plan on exploring more of her backstory? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
