It seems all these years later, ‘Jem’ is still “excitement,” “adventure,” “glamor and glitter, fashion and fame.”  The live action ‘Jem and the Holograms’ movie, uh… sucked and bore no resemblance to the original animated series from the 80s.  But ‘Jem’ lives on in other ways.  Integrity Toys released a high quality doll line that updated the original toys and added several dolls based on characters that never made it into the Hasbro line.  And IDW has updated and diversified the cast in a series of comic books.

Their first series, ‘Jem & The Holograms’ lasted for 26 issues and revamped the characters for the modern age.  Not only were the characters depicted with different body types, Kimber and Stormer, unlikely friends from the original cartoon, were now full-on lesbians, Jetta was now black and Stormer and her brother Craig were now Asian.  A new character, Blaze joined the Misfits and revealed herself to be transgender.

This series was followed by a miniseries ‘Jem and the Misfits’.  Now come ‘Jem and the Holograms: Infinite’, written by Kelly Thompson, with art by Stacey Lee and covers by Veronica Fish  and ‘Jem and the Holograms: The Misfits: Infinite’, also written by Thompson, with art by Jenn St-Onge, and covers also by Fish.

Thompson said:

“We love what we’ve already done with Jem and The Holograms and The Misfits and we didn’t want to change any of that, but we did want to shake things up in a very real way that will matter. So [we did] our first ever crossover event!  We decided to go about as big as you can go…other worlds, sci-fi shenanigans, reunions, betrayals, death, destruction, saving the world, and also, of course, music. It’s a really fun change of pace for us, but one that I think completely fits into everything that has come before and with creators like Stacey Lee, Jenn St-Onge, and M. Victoria Robado on board I feel confident we’re gonna pull it off with style to spare.”
