Toy News Tuesday: Heroes, Horrors, & Hunters

Just when you thought you were out, we reel you right back in with an all new Toy News Tuesday! We’re the one weekly column right here on ScienceFiction.com where we seek out all of the awesome news you need to know about any announcements and cool happenings in the toy industry and put them all in one easy to find place for you! Things are a little quiet on the toy front this week. With the long holiday weekend, it seems like many companies either got a bunch of announcements out early (check out the massive amount of stuff announced last week!), or decided to wait until after the holiday weekend to reveal their upcoming surprises! Either way, this week we’ve still got some fantastic new items from Diamond Select Toys, NECA, Mezco, and more! Be sure not to miss anything in the Toy News for the week of May 30th, 2017!

What’s New From Diamond Select Toys?

Things may be mostly quiet this week, but our good friends at Diamond Select Toys have still got a ton of cool new stuff to show off! We have mentioned a few of these items in the last week or so (like these sweet ‘Justice League’ Vinimates!), but the majority of the items that were solicited this week from Diamond Select Toys are brand new and have never been seen before! NECA Teases New Predator

This week we’ve got a double dose of fantastic news for fans of NECA’s long running ‘Predator’ line! We’ve got the full reveal of a brand new figure, plus a teaser for an upcoming figure that is yet to be revealed!

First up we’ve got the reveal of NECA’s new Ultimate ‘Ahab’ Predator based on the  Dark Horse Comics ‘Alien Vs. Predator’ comic book series! The ‘Ahab’ Predator was previously offered as an SDCC exclusive way back in 2014, but this time around it’s built on the new ‘Ultimate’ Predator buck so that it’s god a ton of newly added articulation to give you the full Ultimate ‘Predator’ experience when this 7″ figure hits stores in October! This brand-new version of Ahab is based on his appearance in the Dark Horse comics. We’ve given our SDCC 2014 exclusive a massive upgrade, equipping it with the all new “Ultimate” Predator body which has added articulation in the biceps (bicep swivels), elbows (double elbow joints) and torso, plus an opening gauntlet.

The figure also features new loin armor and skirt, new right gauntlet, new knee armor, fabric cape and all new deco. He’s equipped with brand new accessories too, including an Engineer Gun, Spear, Gauntlet with both 2- and 3-blade configurations, alternate hands, Engineer skull trophy and more!

The Engineer Gun can be held or clipped to the figure’s back. Stands approximately 8″ tall and comes in collector-friendly deluxe window box packaging with opening flap.

In addition to the Ultimate ‘Ahab’ reveal, NECA also posted a new teaser image to their Twitter account that could mean a few different things depending on how you look at it. The image is below:

See, here is where things get tricky. This teaser is likely for one of two different potential figures; squad member Hawkins (who was played by Shane Black in the first ‘Predator’ film), or Dutch in his red polo shirt from the beginning of the film. While the soda bottle in the image clearly says “Hawkins” on it, it’s entirely likely that the team at NECA were amused when they found the bottle and decided to include it in their shared post. While fan demand is there, they have said on numerous occasions that it is unlikely we will see many more human characters included in the ‘Predator’ line due to likeness rights. But really, who knows? Maybe we’ll get Hawkins after all!

Currently, the only human included in the line has been Arnold Schwarzenegger’s ‘Dutch’, which is why it’s more likely that the teased figure will actually be a new version of him. The text on the original teaser says “This cabinet minister, does he always travel on the wrong side of the border?” which is dialogue from early in the first ‘Predator’ film. During the scene it comes from, Dutch is wearing a red polo shirt and is given a folder that looks pretty identical to the folder in this picture as well, leading many to speculate that we will simply be getting another Dutch figure to add to our collection.

Regardless of what figure you think this teaser is implying,  thanks to the team at NECA there always stands a chance that we will eventually end up with both! Only time will tell on that one though.

THUNDER! THUNDER! THUNDERCATS!

San Diego Comic Con 2017 is just around the corner and this week the team at Mezco has announced yet another convention exclusive that you’ll be able to pick up! Currently posted for pre-order as a ‘Summer Exclusive’ is a new version of their Mega Scale Lion-O figure from ‘Thundercats’! While very similar to the previously released version, this new SDCC exclusive version of Mezco’s Mega Scale Lion-O ‘Thundercats’ figure sports a light up feature so that his eyes can glow just like in the classic television series!
