Young sheldon

We knew it was coming, and now, CBS has finally released a trailer for ‘Young Sheldon,’ and surprisingly… it looks, pretty great. Aside from the fact that young Iain Armitage is channeling a perfect Jim Parsons (same for Zoe Perry doing a pretty fantastic Laurie Metcalf), the show somehow still feels fresh and unique despite the fact that it is a spin-off from ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ which has been running on the network for over a decade now. Most likely this is due to the fact that the show’s format is completely different than what they do over on ‘The Big Bang Theory.’ Gone are the laugh tracks, the multiple cameras, and the sitcom-y feels from the flagship show. ‘Young Sheldon’ is shot single camera, relying on the strength of its jokes to pull the laughs from its audience, and it manages to pull at the heartstrings even in just the first trailer with a deftness that is not always found on the original show.

The trailer does an excellent job of not only showing off young Sheldon and Mary Cooper, but the rest of the Cooper clan as well, from Sheldon’s twin sister and brother (who he will be joining in the 9th grade) to his oft-spoken of but never before seen father, who we see Sheldon bonding with in the trailer. And yes, more than anything else, we see why this show was green lit, because a precocious child with Sheldon’s social eccentricities is indeed hilarious, especially as he tackles a high school of students and teachers completely unprepared for his brash honesty and intelligence, and some of the teacher reactions are amazing.
