Extremis

Since debuting in 2014 as a character that was ultimately revealed to be the latest regeneration of The Doctor’s long-time foe The Master, Michelle Gomez has quickly become a fan favorite among Whovians. But it seems that mystery is constantly surrounding the mischievous Missy because though she’s set to return to ‘Doctor Who’ this week, the actress remains cagey when talking about the detail’s surrounding the saucy Time Lady’s comeback.

Despite being announced for the sixth episode of this current season of the seminal sci-fi series (as well as the two-part season finale), Gomez was coy about just how involved Missy will be while speaking to Radio Times recently. In fact, she suggests that most of her parts might not have even made it into the episode when asked about her next appearance alongside Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor:

“I don’t know, that depends on how they cut it. They might have cut all my bits – I never take anything for granted. Last thing I know I think I was in episode 6, I think I made it through to that. But all the other stuff might be on the cutting-room floor. Yeah, you’re just gonna have to pay attention. That’s all I want to say.”

However, that wasn’t all she said. Gomez went on to offer a clue as to how Missy makes her return after being in quite a tough spot. If you recall, Missy was being surrounded by Daleks when we last saw her in ‘The Witch’s Familiar’. Just when things weren’t looking good, she proclaimed, “I’ve just had a clever idea.” When asked whether we’d uncover what the idea was and how it led to her escape, the Scottish star confirmed that we would while offering a small hint:

“We do, and it was a clever idea because I didn’t see that coming. It’s quite exciting. And can you tell me what accent I was using when I announced ‘I’ve just had a very clever idea’? It’s a big movie star – I’ll give you some clues. It’s a man, a big movie star in the 70s and 80s, and he’s still out there now, doing good work. And there was a robbery, there was a big big robbery – a heist, actually, in the movie where I am using that accent. And I’m not just talking unrelatable tangents here. That was a clue.”

The outlet mentions that Michael Caine delivers that line in the original version of ‘The Italian Job’ when his character finds himself in similarly dire circumstances, but what could a heist movie have to do with Missy’s plan to get to safety? Or maybe it has something to do with the veteran actor himself and the actions of his other iconic characters? Knowing what we know about Missy, it may be dangerous territory to try and think like her in order to understand why she does what she does. But if you’re feeling adventurous and want to try to decipher the madness, check out this clip and form your own theories before getting the answer on Saturday night:
