There was a bit of controversy about Karen Gillan’s outfit in the upcoming Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle‘ and while she said that there is a valid reason for it, we’ve still had no idea what it could be. Until now. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had also stated that “make sense once you know the plot” and likely said so with his trademark smile.
Our very own Jason Motes provided the theory that in the first film “Robin Williams’ character Alan Parrish started out as a little boy playing the enchanted board game before getting sucked into it, where he spent decades trapped and grew to adulthood. It’s entirely possible that Gillan’s character was similarly a child who got sucked into the game and grew to adulthood… without a suitable change of clothes.”
I swear Motes might be prophetic, as the details were confirmed by the official synopsis at the bottom of the post.
Footage from the film was recently screened at CinemaCon showing that we’ll be following four high-school kids that are cleaning out their school’s basement as part of their punishment in detention and find a video game of ‘Jumanji.’ I’m not sure how this works like the boardgame did, but apparently, it did, and once the students select their characters, they become them and are transported within the game. We know that a nerdy kid ends up becoming The Rock while a popular girl ends up as Jack Black’s character. A quiet and reserved girl ends up as Karen Gillan and as older video games tended to have the female leads a little more scantily clad regardless of the genre that is the explanation of her outfit.
While I’m sure the super shy character now dressed like this will provide some great humor in one or two scenes right at the start it does seem a bit overkill and you have to wonder if she’ll be finding a way to cover up shortly after the transformation occurs.
What are your thoughts on the explanation as to Gillan’s outfit in the film? Are you okay with this or think it is a bit ridiculous that the directors went this route? Share your thoughts below!
In a brand new Jumanji adventure, the tables are turned as four teenagers are sucked into Jumanji’s world – pitted against rhinos, black mambas and an endless variety of jungle traps and puzzles. To survive, they’ll play as characters from the game: meek Spencer becomes a brave explorer (Dwayne Johnson); hulky jock Fridge becomes a tiny genius (Kevin Hart); It-girl Bethany becomes a bookworm professor (Jack Black), and unathletic Martha becomes an Amazonian warrior (Karen Gillan). To beat the game and return to the real world with their lives, they’ll have to start seeing things in an entirely different way.
‘Jumanji’ directed by Jake Kasdan and starring Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Nick Jonas, Karen Gillan and Alex Wolff hits theaters on July 28, 2017.
