Could Michael B. Jordan Be Playing A Young Morpheus In The Next ‘Matrix’ Movie?

Screenwriter Zak Penn came out, via Twitter, to clarify that the new Warner Brothers ‘Matrix’ movie is not a reboot of the original movie from 1999.  Instead, it sounds as though the studio is simply looking toward this successful and groundbreaking film and its innovative sci-fi universe for new stories.  Reportedly, Michael B. Jordan is being eyed to star and now word has it that he may be playing a younger version of Laurence Fishburne’s character Morpheus.

The studio has reportedly established a writers room, meaning that it looks like WB is looking to create a “shared universe” of movies set within the ‘Matrix’ world.  Reportedly, the young Morpheus idea is one that WB is particularly keen on, but now one has to wonder what else we might see.

Even Keanu Reeves has expressed interest in revisiting the brand.

Morpheus was the mentor to Reeves’ Neo and was something of a zen master sort.  A prequel could follow Morpheus’ own journey to discovering the machine-ruled Matrix.  Presumably the grizzled warrior endured many adventures before locating “The One”, Neo.

Of course, follow-ups to long dormant franchises can be hit or miss.  For every ‘Jurassic World’, there’s an ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’.  And quality isn’t always the deciding factor as to whether these films do well or don’t.

And it can’t be avoided that while ‘The Matrix’ was a highly successful film and that its combat choreography influenced countless other action movies, it’s sequels were not well-received and it could even be argued that the careers of the Wachowskis, who directed all three, have never recovered.  All three of their following films, ‘Speed Racer’, ‘Cloud Atlas’ and ‘Jupiter Ascending’ have been poorly reviewed flops.  On the bright side, they seem to have recovered somewhat with their hit Netflix series ‘Sense8’.  (It should be noted that so far, it doesn’t appear that the Wachowskis will be involved in the new ‘Matrix’ movies.)
