jimmi simpson man in black william

SPOILER WARNING: If you haven’t seen Season 1 of ‘Westworld,’ then you may want to head onto the next article!

Aside from the obvious characters who died during ‘Westworld’ Season 1, there have been some questions about other characters and actors and whether or not they would be returning for the second season of the hit HBO show. Questions that get even more attention since we have so long to wait until that second season actually premieres (it had better be worth the wait as 2018 is a long ways off). The latest speculation is about whether or not Jimmi Simpson will be returning to the show following his arc in Season 1.

We followed his character William’s arrival and adventures in the park, only to discover that we were actually seeing the backstory of both the Man in Black and the park itself, as William’s story took place some 30 odd years before the “present” timeline of the park, and William was confirmed as just being the younger version of the Man in Black. So logically, with the conclusion of that story and the reveal of who he is, there’s no reason for Jimmi Simpson to come back and play young William again, right? Well, according to the man playing young William, Jimmi Simpson:

“So far, my involvement in [Season 2] is unclear. If they have more for William, I would assume it would be a whole new kind of story. Because I feel like this story, the love affair [with Evan Rachel Wood’s character, Dolores], we know everything, we know what happens, we don’t have to belabor that point. But if they have a reason–I mean, it was the greatest set I’ve ever worked on. But we’re all speculating what Season 2 will be, and I think it’ll be something that will blow our minds, to the degree that Season 1 did. But I wouldn’t be surprised if William showed up Season 3 or something.”

Basically, if they like Jimmi Simpson enough, they could always find a way to use him, especially since ‘Westworld’ likes to jump around the timeline so much. Anytime they want to show an earlier age in the park they could use him, He could almost be the benchmark for when the action is taking place, based on the age of William you knew, when in the timeline the current action was happening (if they wanted to go in that direction). They could also have a host that was built in the image of William be played by Jimmi Simpson, as that does seem like something Dr. Ford would have done. He could build a host in the image of William in case he ever needed to ‘replace’ the man that irked him so, in which case Jimmi Simpson could be called back and get to act with actors in the “present” storyline, which would be fun to see.

No matter what, the possibilities with a show like ‘Westworld’ are endless, and I personally think Simpson did a good enough job on Season 1 that they would be foolish not to call him back at one point or another to reprise his role.
