Well, we may not have much in the way of new information at the moment about Sony’s animated ‘Spider-Man’ film (aside from the excited news about Alex Hirsch joining the creative team), but there is a rumor out there that is exciting.

According to the grapevine, it seems that Ice Cube is under consideration to voice the role of  Miles Morale’s father, Jefferson Davis. In the comics, the character is a former NYPD cop with a strained relationship with his brother Aaron who was partially responsible for getting Jefferson arrested (even though he was eventually bailed out by Nick Fury himself). The casting choice would make sense considering the fact that Ice Cube has previous worked with the film’s producers, Phil Lord and Chris Miller on ’21 Jump Street’ and ’22 Jump Street,’ but there is little to confirm the rumor beyond that, especially considering what happened the last time Ice Cube was rumored to be part of a ‘Spider-Man’ movie. Back then, it was thought that Ice Cube might be tapped to play J. Jonah Jameson in the MCU’s ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming,’ but then the actor denied that rumor with this response:

“If I’m not playing Spider-Man, I’m not doing shit… I’m not about to play one of these side-busters.”

So… if he was not cool with playing the legendary comic-book man, Ice Cube may not be cool with playing Miles’ dad, who is barely known from the comics (due to how new Miles and his story are), and even more of a side character than J. Jonah Jameson. Still, Ice Cube could have changed his mind by this point, especially since he would just be lending his voice to his character, and because this is the launch of the Mile Morales version of Spider-Man, which could ultimately be more memorable than just being part of another reboot of the Peter Parker character and his storyline.

The animated ‘Spider-Man’ film is slated to open in theaters on December 21, 2018.
