‘Donnie Darko’ was a commercial flop even though critics praised it and has received a huge cult following over the years. Since the 2001 cult classic premiered, there has been one sequel released titled ‘S. Darko’ in 2009. Writer and director Richard Kelly (‘The Box’,’Domino’) wasn’t involved in the film and really it had nearly nothing to do with the original movie,  but he has now expressed interest in returning to the world of ‘Donnie Darko‘ to give the film a proper sequel.

Here is what Kelly has in mind:

“I think there’s something much bigger and more ambitious to do in that universe. It’s big and expensive and I think there’s time to get to that. I want to make sure we’ve got the budget to do it justice and not to compromise anything. Another story in this world needs resources and we need to have that in place. I need to get my next film out of the gate and then we can go back and look at it.”

Between the director’s cut of ‘Donnie Darko’ and ‘S. Darko’ both being panned by critics and fans alike and Kelly’s later work mainly not working out too well at the box office it might be hard for him to get a larger budget. Add into the mix that both Jake Gyllenhaal and Jena Malone being a bit older these days and Gyllenhaal being an A-lister, it might be hard to craft a compelling sequel with the same characters. Of course, if it is set in the same universe you could have different actors popping up though fans who might want to actually see what happened with these two could be turned off from the follow-up.

Not that ‘Donnie Darko’ was really sequel-friendly, to begin with.

Would you like to see Kelly bring Darko back to the big screen with a huge budget or is this a film that really doesn’t need a follow-up? Share your thoughts below!
