According to sources, Sony Pictures is ready to move on its long-standing deal with Valiant Comics to produce a multi-film series based on the comic company’s iconic heroes. The deal with start with long-time Valiant series ‘Harbinger,’ which will also serve to introduce the title anti-hero of the next film to follow, ‘Bloodshot.’
While not enjoying the long-armed commercial reach of the larger comic companies like Marvel or DC, Valiant Comics has been putting out high-quality stories and series for decades, ever since their genesis in the late 1980s by their founders: former Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter and former Marvel Comics writer/editor Bob Layton. ‘Harbinger’ was the company’s first available title, and fared so well with readers and critics alike that Wizard Magazine named ‘Harbinger #1’ their “Collectible of the Decade” for the 1990s. After going dark in 2004 when parent company Acclaim filed bankruptcy, a group of investors quickly purchased the rights to the company and its titles, and in 2012 the company was reborn with fresh takes on their original series, including ‘Harbinger.’
Here’s a description of the ‘Harbinger’ series, from Amazon:
Outside the law. Inside your head. You’ve never met a team of super-powered teenagers quite like the Renegades. Skipping across the country in a desperate attempt to stay one step ahead of the authorities, psionically-powered teenager Peter Stanchek only has one option left – run. But he won’t have to go it alone. As the shadowy corporation known as the Harbinger Foundation draws close on all sides, Peter will have to find and recruit other unique individuals like himself… other troubled, immensely powerful youths with abilities beyond their control. Their mission? Bring the fight back to the Harbinger Foundation’s founder Toyo Harada – and dismantle his global empire brick by brick…
‘Bloodshot,’ a soldier saved from death via nanotechnology inserted in his bloodstream, will serve as a foil to the Harbinger crew in the film. According to reports, he’ll be tasked with hunting down Harbingers – and this treatment will serve as the stepping stone for Bloodshot to move into his own solo film, the second movie in a planned five-film series to feature Valiant titles.
No specific word yet as to when production will start or a release date will be announced, but we will keep you posted as we hear further news on the emerging Valiant cinematic universe!
