This is not your father’s View-Master. That seems to be the big concept behind Mattel’s new toy based on an old toy. The new View-Master is more a pair of VR goggles than anything like the original, and it is compatible with iOS and Android phones, meaning down the road you could potential use it for any other high concept VR environments built. For now, the big push is for ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ VR Experience, which will put fans of the classic (and beloved) ‘Batman’ cartoon from the early 1990’s right into the world of Gotham. Not much is known about what exactly we will be able to do once we put on the View-Master and start exploring, but at the very least we should be able to check out many classic locations and characters from the show, and maybe even get to see some kind of story play out as we are watching.

According to Sam Register, who is the president of Warner Bros Animated and Warner Digital Series:

“We are extremely excited for our fans to be able to experience ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ in a new and immersive way,”

And in a statement made by Mark Morse, Director of Advanced Concepts over at Mattel, about the company OTOY and its collaboration with Warner Bros and DC Entertainment to create the VR Experience:

“OTOY is the perfect partner to create new VR content for View-Master. The Batman experience (is) just a glimpse into the incredible things to come from this collaboration.”

It definitely seems like a win-win for all parties involved, as ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ is still beloved by fans who watched it back when it aired, and is still being discovered by new comic-book fans today. I know I would definitely like to pop on the View Master once it is released and explore Gotham and the characters as we never could before. Would you?
