netflix-and-chill

The term has become synonymous for getting in a quickie or some quality alone time between two consenting adults, generally with Netflix on in the background. Now, though, Umami Media and Cinecrowd have decided to create “the first movie based on an internet meme” that happens to be horror. I’m assuming they meant the first horror based off of an Internet meme as otherwise, they are so quickly forgetting the classic Lifetime 2014 release of ‘Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever’ which everyone was quite happy to forget about.

Written and directed by Michael Middelkoop, this short film is a horror comedy that looks fun and if anything probably shouldn’t have ended up just as a short film.

According to Middelkoop, “With Netflix & Chill, I hope to deliver an absurd horror comedy that makes a bit of fun of our excessive media consumption. Also, there should be enough gore to make both John Carpenter and Wes Craven proud.” That is a rather bold statement when referencing two of the greatest horror icons to have created films and will set a high standard for his creation. What is interesting is that this claim is being made even though Crowdsourcing the budget has not yet been completed and there is no guarantee that ‘Netflix & Chill’ will make their requested funding. In fact, it seems unlikely if you look at their current Cinecrowd account.

Now, if they do meet their goal the film will go into production in the Spring of 2017 and be getting global television distribution through ShortsTV. On top of that, they’ll also be planning to do a festival run.

We’ve also got the poster for the film to share with you today:

The teaser looks to have potential but the shelf life on Internet memes is pretty short and that this won’t be a feature length film will make viewership be even lower.

Do you think that ‘Netflix & Chill’ is a solid concept in for a modern horror movie? Will you be checking it out when it is released? Share your thoughts below!
