Morgan-2016

Kate Mara and Paul Giamatti star in a new science fiction drama ‘Morgan‘ in which Mara plays Lee Weathers, “a corporate risk-management consultant” who must determine whether or not to terminate Morgan, an artificial life form played by Anya Taylor-Joy, who possesses super human intelligence and abilities.  The film is the directorial debut of Luke Scott (son of Ridley) and was written by Seth Owen.

Since the film focuses on an artificial life form, 20th Century Fox attempted a unique experiment and requested that IBM’s super computer (and ‘Jeopardy’ champ) Watson analyze the film and edit together a trailer.  How did Watson do?  Were his scientific analyses on par with a human’s sense of timing and drama?

You can watch the resulting trailer below, as well as a making-of featurette:

Perhaps it’s just me, but while the trailer looks fairly typical and has a sense of drama, I really wasn’t clear on what the movie was ABOUT based on it, beyond the fact that Morgan was an AI.  It’s not clear why she is imprisoned and then the line about having a teenage daughter seemed tacked on.

The film is a drama/thriller/horror flick.  There’s no hint of the reported gore in the film in the trailer.

‘Morgan’ has gotten mixed reviews, with a less-than-average 44% ranking on Rotten Tomatoes with the ‘Chicago Sun-Times” Richard Roeper declaring “This is one of the worst movies of 2016.”  Others were kinder, but the film has been criticized for being generally unoriginal and predictable, despite an interesting set-up.

Will you be checking this movie out this weekend?  Did the trailer influence you one way or the other?

‘Morgan’ directed by Luke Scott, stars Kate Mara, Anya Taylor-Joy, Rose Leslie, Michael Yare, Toby Jones, Chris Sullivan, Boyd Holbrook, Vinette Robinson, Michelle Yeoh, Brian Cox, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Paul Giamatti and is playing in theaters now.
