‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Spoilers Ahead! If you want to go into Spidey’s first solo foray into the MCU without any prior knowledge, looks away now!
According to The Wrap, who have two sources who claim to have a lot of knowledge of the project, it seems that Zendaya will indeed be playing Peter Parker’s long-time love interest Mary-Jane Watson in the the MCU film ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming.’ It is exciting news for anyone who is a fan of the 19 year old Disney channel star (‘Shake It Up,’ ‘K.C. Undercover’), as it makes her role in the ‘Spider-Man’ films exceptionally important, meaning she will get a lot of screen time during the film opposite Tom Holland. This comes after months of speculation on who she might be playing, as the original casting news said she would be playing a “key role” as a character named “Michelle.”
It is not unusual for casting notices to be vague and misleading nowadays in order to maintain the secrecy of a project (especially with Disney and Marvel involved), and many had already speculated that Zendaya would be a good fit for the feisty girlfriend of Peter Parker who was previously portrayed by Kirsten Dunst in Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man’ films opposite Tobey Maguire, who at the time was in the the role of Peter Parker.
Of course, many comics fans might start asking whether Zendaya is actually going to dye her hair red for the role, as the Mary Jane Watson character has ALWAYS been portrayed as a red-head, but in today’s age of movie interpretations, I think Marvel would be ok with not having Mary Jane Watson being a red-head.
What are your thoughts on Zendaya playing the major love interest in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming?’ Do you think she has the right attitude for Mary Jane Watson? Would the lack of red hair bother you? Share your opinions on the matter in the comics below!
