There are a lot of old properties coming back to life and Shane Black (‘Iron Man 3‘,’Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’) shares how he believes that ‘The Monster Squad 2’ could work and be fun to do! Of course, with being knee deep in working on ‘The Predator‘ which isn’t a planned reboot, it isn’t too surprising that he has continuity of old properties on the brain.

For those of you familiar with the film, you may recall that a reboot of ‘The Monster Squad’ was scrapped in 2014 so obviously the next logical step would be to continue ,where the franchise left off. With ‘The Monster Squad’ celebrating the 30th anniversary of its release, there is quite a bit of time to cover to continue on the film as a sequel.

Not only that, but Shane has some interesting inspiration as to what gave him this idea in the first place.

How would a sequel work exactly? Well, to do so would actually end up creating a bit of a remake of the original in the first place. In fact, it sounds a bit like some of the proposed sequel ideas to ‘The Goonies’ which had been floating around for awhile as:

“It would be interesting to have two movies – one The Monster Squad, and one The Monster Squad and they’re 30 years apart and so are the kids; the characters have aged. As long as people understood that’s what we’re doing, I think that could be fun. That’s a good idea!”

Black thinks that with the cult following of the original 1987 which flopped at theaters but became a cult classic could really resonate with audiences. I mean kids fighting Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Wolf Man could be an entertaining premise and with this being a sequel even new monsters could be thrown in. In fact, returning to one of his first works really seems to have him excited about fan reaction as:

“The cult surprised [me]. I didn’t even realise it had been successful. I loved it, I had fun working on it and it was one of the first things I’d ever written. And it wasn’t just that it wasn’t a hit – it was a huge failure. No one saw it. I don’t know how on earth it caught on years later.”

When circling back to this idea it wasn’t defunct ‘Goonies’ sequel that brought the idea to mind but was actually Stephen King’s ‘It’ that gave him the inspiration for where he would want to go with the sequel. Not in the reboot but the fact that you have the same group of kids returning to fight a great evil after having grown up:

“When you say the kids are grown-up the first thing I go to is the movie, or the book really, It by Stephen King, which is about kids who fight monsters when they’re young, then as grown-ups they’re sort of beckoned and they have to return to their childhood hometown. And I think that’s kind of close to what you’re saying in a way. I don’t know how you would distance yourself from that.”

At this point, there is no indication that a sequel that reboots ‘The Monster Squad’ is actually in the works but Shane might just have a solid idea in mind for one.
