Fresh takes on science fiction stories can be hard to come by these days.  We live with an entertainment industry that’s overpopulated by remakes, reboots, reimaginings, and rehashes in general; couple all of that with new stories that “borrow” heavily from existing tropes and plot ideas, and it can indeed be extremely challenging to find a sci-fi story that counts as “original.”  Widely-released films that fit this description can be even harder to come by; with the exception of ‘The Lobster‘ and possibly ‘10 Cloverfield Lane,‘ an argument can be made that 2016 has been devoid of national/worldwide releases of truly original sci-fi films.

Can ‘Arrival’ be an entry into the field to help turn the tide?  Flying relatively under the radar so far, the film is slated to appear in theaters in just a few months, and it looks to have a fairly singular take on the “alien invasion” type of tale: mysterious, gigantic obelisk-like spacecraft touchdown in a dozen locations around the Earth, and it appears that the ships are used as some type of portal to communicate with the alien beings who sent them.  Unlike the vast majority of movies, however, the language barrier truly seems to be an unconquerable obstacle, and if we can’t communicate with our visitors, then things with them will definitely seem, well, alien.

The movie itself features some hefty star power, with Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker all lending their sizable acting talents to helping to bring this tale to life.  While the final judgment on the film remains to be made until we actually see it, of course, ‘Arrival’ certainly does look intriguing at this point.  The full trailer has just been released today, so take a peek at it, and let us know in the comments below what you think!

When mysterious spacecrafts touch down across the globe, an elite team – lead by expert linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) – is brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers – and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity.

Starring: Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker

Director: Denis Villeneuve

‘Arrival’ is scheduled to premiere in US theaters on November 11, 2016.

Tony Schaab mixed up all this fake puke at home and then he went to this movie theater, hid the puke in his jacket, climbed up to the balcony, and then he made a noise like this: hua-hua-hua-huaaaaaaa… and then he dumped it over the side, all over the people in the audience. And then – this was horrible – all the people started getting sick and throwing up all over each other… and he never felt so bad in his entire life!  A lover of most things sci-fi and horror, Tony is an author by day and a DJ by night. Come hang out with Tony on Facebook and Twitter to hear him spew semi-funny nonsense and get your opportunity to finally put him in his place.
