Oh sure, Sam and Dean and Cas are dreamy!  But 30 years ago, they wouldn’t have been able to hold a demon possessed candle to the biggest teen heartthrob of the early 80s, Rick Springfield.  Not only did Springfield score a series of pop hits including the Grammy Award-winning “Jessie’s Girl” but melted hearts as Dr. Noah Drake on a different type of hour-long drama, daytime soap classic ‘General Hospital’.

Now generations collide as Springfield joins ‘Supernatural’ for the upcoming Season 12.

Springfield plays Lucifer’s latest vessel.  At the ‘Supernatural’ panel at SDCC, executive producer Robert Singer explains, “The first vessel that [Lucifer] feels comfortable with is a rock star who’s a little bit on the downside who’s trying to come back.”

Don’t look for Springfield’s part to recur as Singer also stated that Lucifer was “going to try out a few different vessels.”  Last season, Lucifer possessed Castiel as Singer explained, “You need a really strong vessel like Sam, like Castiel…”  When Amara ripped him from Cas’ body, his fate was unknown.  But now we know he’ll still be hanging around.

Springfield’s character wasn’t named but clearly he has more to him than the average rock star if he provides a worthy host.

Springfield has a long history of appearing on genre television, stretching back to the 70s.  He appeared on ‘Wonder Woman’, ‘The Incredible Hulk’, ‘The Six Million Dollar Man’ and ‘Battlestar Galactica’.  In 1992, he starred in the short-lived series ‘The Human Target’ based on the DC Comics character.  He recently popped up on the acclaimed series ‘True Detective’.

In 2014, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

‘Supernatural’ returns to Wednesday nights at 9pm EST on The CW this fall.
