While Marvel Studios made some major announcements at their San Diego Comic-Con panel over the weekend, they didn’t have a lot of previews to show the world outside of Hall H. Of the five films the House of Ideas brought to the con, True Believers only saw video from ‘Doctor Strange’. However, three of the projects (‘Black Panther’, ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, and ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’) are still in the early stages of production, so there isn’t much to offer yet. But what about ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2‘, which has already wrapped on filming? Why haven’t we seen the reel shown at SDCC? Director James Gunn replied to fan queries regarding why his footage has gone unreleased so far.
During a recent Facebook Live chat, Gunn revealed that fans will get to see the preview for his upcoming Phase Three film, but not right now. While he made it clear that he’s excited for the public to see it, the filmmaker emphasized that the VFX work isn’t finished yet and he only wants to put out the best possible version of the footage. Here’s what he had to say about it:
“Of course, I want to share everything with you guys, it’s important to me to be able to do that. But here’s the thing: the footage we released at Comic-Con will eventually be seen by the public but in a more finished form. It’s very early days, we’ve only been stopped shooting for a month… The visual effects are not finished. I am a perfectionist. People who follow me know that everything needs to be exactly how I want it to be to be seen in a film, so that it stands up to repeated viewings. And the truth is this Comic-Con footage… it’s not something that I nor Marvel are comfortable with being out there and standing up to repeated viewings. The visual effects just aren’t finished. If I do something, I want to do it 100% correctly. However, to sit in the audience one time with an excited crowd and show them an in-progress piece of film, it’s a different story.”
It’s hard not to empathize with that stance. Obviously, we’re all very excited and impatient because we want to know what’s going on with our most anticipated movies, but we should be able to understand this line of thinking. Luckily, there are some very detailed accounts of the footage online somewhere that should hold us over while we attempt to patiently wait for the first footage from the film.
‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ starring Chris Pratt, Zoë Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn, Pom Klementieff, Kurt Russell, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, and Glenn Close takes off on May 5, 2017.
