Power Rangers

As we all know, in the original ‘Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ series, whenever the clean cut American teens morphed into their spandex uniforms with bulky helmets, the footage was switched to recycled clips from a Japanese series.  But one thing’s for certain, these are not Japanese stunt persons in the new all-U.S. film, ‘Saban’s Power Rangers’.

In the latest photo from the movie, we see the heroes still sporting their helmets but with their faces exposed, giving you a better look at Naomi Scott as Kimberly the Pink Ranger, R.J. Cyler as Billy the Blue Ranger, Dacre Montgomery as Jason the Red Ranger, Ludi Lin as Zack the Black Ranger and Becky G. as Trini the Yellow Ranger.

It’s interesting to note that these suits of armor are much more detailed than the featureless spandex suits in the original show and even more than the rubbery padded suits in the first movie.  There’s almost an organic feel to them but also a prismatic spacey sheen.  The suits look slightly different from the ones in the photo at the top of the page, so maybe they wear more than one version in the film or maybe they just look different close up.

The movie follows the exploits of five average teens who are gifted with incredible powers in order to defend their town of Angel Grove from extraterrestrial invader Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks) and her forces.

The new film, directed by Dean Israelite, hits theaters on March 24, 2017.  ‘Saban’s Power Rangers’, from Lionsgate,  also stars Bryan Cranston as Zordon.

What do you think of the ‘Power Rangers’ new look?  Are you impressed or would you prefer something more traditional?
