Lots of awesome news came out of this weekend’s Star Wars Celebration in London.  With the first-ever SW standalone film, ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,’ due to hit theaters later this year, the film was understandably a focus for many of the fans in attendance – and Disney did not disappoint in their provisions.  Not only did we get an awesome “sizzle reel” of footage to help hold us over, several cast members participated in panels throughout the weekend and were able to speak a little on their characters and the film’s story.

Alan Tudyk plays the role of K-2SO, a former Imperial droid that has been “reprogrammed” and now works on the side of the Rebel Alliance.  At Celebration, an unfinished scene from the film was shown, without dialogue or any sound effects, that featured K-2SO getting a little sassy with lead character Jyn Erso.  During the panel, Tudyk talked about K-2’s relationship with the Rebels and his, shall we say, current mode of functionality:

“That’s K-2 for you.  Look, [Jyn] gives him her pack and he doesn’t really grab it.  That’s K-2: ‘Go get the bags, droid.’  ‘No, I’d rather not. That’s not my thing.’  Cassian reprogrammed him, and did like a data wipe.  When he reprogrammed him, he’s not quite all there.  He speaks his mind and says things, I don’t know, that can be unsettling.  He’s very honest.  If you know any old people, he’s like that; he just says whatever he thinks.  It was great.  It was really great to play him.”

“Cassian” is in reference to another character in ‘Rogue One,’ fellow Rebel fighter Cassian Andor, played by Diego Luna.  Luna was also in attendance at Celebration, and he dropped a tidbit in a panel that indicates that K-2’s role in the film may be more integral than is initially being let on:

“One of the most important members of this team is a droid, an Imperial droid that is [re]programmed by the Rebellion.  His name is K-2SO.  He’s probably the best friend Cassian has in the Rebellion – or the only one.”

On a lighter, more irrelevant note, Tudyk also shared during his panel a funny story about having a talk with fellow Star Wars Universe droid Anthony Daniels, who plays C-3PO.  They had a chance to “talk droid” and compare notes on their respective experiences:

I met him at that party, at the opening night [for ‘Star Wars, Episode VII: The Force Awakens’].  I said, ‘I’m K-2SO. I’m going to be the next droid in the series of droids.’  He said, ‘Do you wear a suit or are you CGI?’  I said, ‘Oh, I’m CGI.’  And he said, ‘You shit.’  Lovely man.  We’re pen pals.  Pen pals to this day.”

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ opens in US theaters on December 16, 2016.
