While Stephen King’s ‘It‘ is very dated, the one shining point to it is Tim Curry as Pennywise and if the first image of Bill Skarsgard (‘Hemlock Grove’,’Allegiant’) in the role is any indication – we’re going to be in for a good time. While it doesn’t promise the slapstick of the first clown that haunted our dreams, it truly delivers on a clearly sadistic evil look that you wouldn’t want to run into at night.

I’m thinking he is going to work out as a better choice than Will Poulter but obviously it is still far too early to tell.

Thankfully, though, it doesn’t seem to match up with the rather Ghost Rider looking sketch of the character that we had previously seen. While I wasn’t the biggest fan of that look it did have the potential to be original. Evil though? That is what we’re getting in this debut image which comes from Entertainment Weekly:

Regarding the role, Skarsgard states:

“It’s such an extreme character. Inhumane. It’s beyond even a sociopath, because he’s not even human. He’s not even a clown. I’m playing just one of the beings It creates.”

Thankfully he isn’t planning on making his Pennywise as a tribute to Curry’s:

“It’s important that we do something fresh and original for this one. It’s purposely not going toward that weird, greasy look.

Tim Curry’s performance was truly great, but it’s important for me to do something different because of that. I’ll never be able to make a Tim Curry performance as good as Tim Curry.”

I think the most telling thing he has to say about the ‘It’ film, though, was:

“It truly enjoys the shape of the clown Pennywise, and enjoys the game and the hunt. What’s funny to this evil entity might not be funny to everyone else. But he thinks it’s funny.”

Skarsgard is making a strong case as to why his take on Pennywise will be worth checking out. Obviously, we won’t know much until a trailer drops but I’m cautiously getting my hopes up.
