mon mothma

The very reason that a film like “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” exists is to give audiences a bit more back-story into events of the Star Wars universe that have already happened.  Unlike ‘Star Wars, Episode VII: The Force Awakens,’ which takes place moving forward in the fictional universe’s chronology, the ‘Star Wars Story’ films will be filling in gaps or telling deeper stories of points in Star Wars’ canon that have already been established.

It makes sense, then, that characters featured in the ‘Star Wars Story’ movies whom audiences have already met in other Star Wars films will have expanded roles to play.  Certainly, ‘Rogue One’ features many characters that are new to bigger Star Wars universe (and the movie-goers that watch them), but we’ve been given glimpses of multiple familiar faces, including ultimate dark-side baddie Darth Vader and Rebel Alliance leader Mon Mothma.

Mon Mothma, in particular, makes for an intriguing addition to the tale; the character was first seen, very briefly, in ‘Star Wars: Return of the Jedi’ back in 1983.  She was planned to have an appearance in 2005’s ‘Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith,’ but her scenes ended up on the cutting room floor (and on DVD/Blu-Ray special features, where they can be seen now).  In ‘Rogue One,’ Mon Mothma is actually played by the same actress, Genevieve O’Reilly, who played the character in those ‘Revenge of the Sith’ deleted scenes.

With her appearance in the ‘Rogue One’ trailer, fans were still left to wonder how big of a role Mon Mothma would actually play in the film; was this appearance just a fun nod for fans, or something more substantial?  Kathleen Kennedy, president of LucasFilm, spoke to EW recently about the character and her part in the film:

“We actually see quite a bit of her.  The Rebel alliance is in disarray. Pretty panicked. Up against it. And she is trying the best she can to provide the leadership, in amongst a wide variety of Rebel soldiers that have very differing opinions as to what to do.”

This is an exciting development for fans, to be sure!  Stay tuned to our site, as we will have as much breaking news about ‘Rogue One’ as it develops in the coming months.

‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ hits US theaters on December 18, 2016.
