Rila-Fukushima-the-wolverine

We’ve just learned that Rila Fukushima (‘The Wolverine’,’Arrow’) has just signed on to be part of the cast in the live-action adaptation of ‘Ghost in the Shell‘! While most of the early movie’s’ news has been of the white-washing of the central lead by casting Scarlett Johansson, it seems that the studio has been quickly changing direction with each new announcement. Having shown off her action chops to western audiences when she appeared in ‘The Wolverine’ it could have been an easy choice to see her play the movie’s lead and I hope she ends up as one of the central characters.

Nothing is known about Fukushima’s part at this time and we don’t even know if she’ll be working with or against Johansson’s character. What we do know is that she’ll be joining a cast that also includes Michael Pitt as The Laughing Man, Beat Takeshi Kitano as Daisuke Aramaki, Juliette Binoche as Dr. Ouelet, Pilou Asbæk as Batou, Kaori Momoi, and members of Section 9 played by Chin Han, Danusia Samal, Lasarus Ratuere, Yutaka Izumihara, and Tuwanda Manyimo.

This film is being based on one of the most well-known mangas to be created by Masamune Shirow and has been released as multiple films, television series, and video games which have had a large impact on western audiences.

Are you happy to hear that Rila Fukushima was cast in ‘Ghost in the Shell’? Do you think they’ll be having her play someone who is in on the action or more of a support role? Share your thoughts below!
