When ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ came out, fans noticed that Anna Paquin’s Rogue was cut out of the film despite being included in the promotional materials leading up to it. The character was reinserted into the film thanks to the ‘Rogue Cut’, which was released about a year after the initial movie hit theaters. Now, it looks like we have the same situation with ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ as Bryan Singer has cut the majority of Lana Condor’s Jubilee out of the upcoming Marvel mutant motion picture from 20th Century Fox. However, it doesn’t sound like a new edit of the film is in the fan favorite character’s future.
In a recent interview with Fandango, Singer revealed that there are currently no plans for an alternate cut of the latest chapter in the X-Men film franchise. In fact, he shared that he’s not really into doing that sort of thing in general and ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past – The Rogue Cut’ was more of a special case:
“There will be no alternate cut of this movie. There will be nothing like the Rogue Cut or anything like that. I’m not a big fan of director’s cuts or extended editions, I never have been. In the case of ‘Apocalypse’, I removed what would be considered a conventional amount from the movie to protect what we call the collective experience of the feature theatrically. How it feels pace wise and movement wise.”
This is especially disappointing news as fans thought that they’d finally see a proper depiction of Jubilee on the big screen. As photos from the set began to leak out, everyone started to get excited for the relative newcomer Condor and the delightfully 80s spin on her character’s attire. However, as people will find out this weekend when the movie hits theaters, Jubilee has mostly ended up on the cutting room floor. But if it’s any consolation, Singer does say that she has some solid moments on the DVD, including a scene where she unleashes her powers:
“We do have a moment where Jubilee uses her powers that you’ll see on the DVD. I wanted more Jubilee.”
Jubilee wasn’t the only young member of the team to see her involvement in the latest blockbuster cut down. We’ve previously heard that the majority of the mall scene that can be seen in some TV spots had been cut, but there was another pivotal moment in Cyclops’ narrative that was left out as well:
“[There was a] farewell between Scott and his brother [Alex]. It’s strange for the audience sometimes because they say, ‘It’s a good scene, why did you remove it?’ But if you sat in a theater and watched it with all those scenes back in, it may seem good, but slow. And I don’t want the audience to feel that.”
Even though I may have liked the movie more than most critics so far, I’m still extremely disappointed that Jubilee was mostly left out of ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’, especially since this isn’t the first time that she was omitted from an X-Men movie. Maybe one day we’ll get to fully see her in action alongside her teammates, but until then, at least she’s featured in this awesome commercial:
Were you hoping to see more of Jubilee in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’? Are you disappointed that there won’t be an alternate cut of the movie that would see her scenes with Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Nightcrawler reinserted into the narrative? Sound off in the comments.
‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ starring Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Ben Hardy, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Sophie Turner, Lana Condor, Olivia Munn, and Oscar Isaac opens in theaters on May 27, 2016.
