tetris

I want to remind you that it isn’t April Fool’s Day while I share that ‘Tetris: The Movie‘ is moving closer to production. The deal came together during the 2016 Cannes Film Festival as a project pitched with an $80 million dollar budget. It will be co-produced by American producer Larry Kasanoff and Threshold Global Studios which is owned by Chinese producer Bruno Wu.

The film has actually been in pre-development from Kasanoff since 2013 and now that funding has been acquired will be filmed in China with a primarily Chinese cast. Without giving away details of the plot the initial genre they are sticking the film in is that of a “sci-fi thriller” which will also be the first installment of a trilogy.

Kasanoff explains that the film is “not at all what you think; it will be a cool surprise.”

No word if the movie is set to just have a release in China or North America as well.

I know what you’re thinking. How can they do a video game with such a rich story and complex characters be done justice with just three movies? Yes, this entire concept is absurd. Almost like taking the name ‘World War Z’ and slapping it on a movie that has absolutely nothing to do with the book it was based off. Still, ‘The LEGO Movie’ has shown creative licenses can be used to give us a good time and both ‘Warcraft‘ and ‘Assassin’s Creed‘ are hoping to change our views on video game adaptations doing well at the box office. I’m sure Atari is banking on the fact that they do having just signed deals to have both ‘Centipede’ and ‘Missile Command’ made into feature length films as well.

Previously Kasanoff did say that:

“This isn’t a movie with a bunch of lines running around the page. We’re not giving feet to the geometric shapes… Brands are the new stars of Hollywood. We have a story behind ‘Tetris’ which makes it a much more imaginative thing… We certainly have the canvas for location-based entertainment based on the epicness. What you [will] see in Tetris is the teeny tip of an iceberg that has intergalactic significance.”

Until we’re shown otherwise, I am not holding my breath on this one.

Seriously, though, can anyone think of a way that a film based off of ‘Tetris’ will be good? Thoughts on what this “sci-fi thriller” is going to be about? Share your ideas below! The best plot idea will get a good laugh from the rest of the readers.
