Tessa-Thompson

RUMOR ALERT: The information presented is not confirmed, so consider it a RUMOR until further announcements are made.

Just days ago we reported that Natalie Portman would not be returning as Jane Foster in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, but in her place ‘Creed’ star Tessa Thompson had been cast in a “key role” that was described as “sort of a superhero.”  Now it appears that this mystery role has been revealed and it’s a character we have long known was going to be in the movie.

Rumor has it that Hela, the Norse goddess of the underworld, hopefully played by Cate Blanchett will serve as the film’s major antagonist.  In Norse mythology and in Marvel Comics, it is the job of the Valkyrior to shepherd the souls of fallen warriors into the afterlife.  In the comics, the Valkyrior are led by Brunnhilde, who eventually ventures forth, like Thor, to serve on Midgard (Earth) as a superhero.  Or “sort of” superhero.  There she operates as The Valkyrie and this is the role Thompson is reported to play.

Our sources are telling us that Tessa Thompson is playing the MCU version of Valkyrie. In the comics, this character’s real name is Brunnhilde, and she is chosen by Odin to lead the Valkyrior, the Asgardians who roam battlefields, and select the honorable dead for Valhalla. The title of Valkyrie just applies to whomever leads the Valkyries though, so we may or may not be seeing her before she takes on said title. Either way, this character aligns with the report, and could very well appear again in Avengers: Infinity War.

The first thing some may notice is that physically, Thompson doesn’t exactly look like the comic book hero.  But as shown in previous ‘Thor’ movies, the movie Asgard is more multicultural with an Asian Hogun and black Heimdall.  So Thompson as Valkyrie shouldn’t be too shocking.

Thompson has had prominent roles in ‘Dear White People’, ‘Selma’ and ‘Creed’.  She also has a part on HBO’s beleaguered series ‘West World’ (whenever that sees the light of day) and another in Alex Garland’s upcoming ‘Annihilation’.

In the comics, Brunnhilde possesses super strength and invulnerability to Thor’s.  She wields an unbreakable sword called Dragonfang and is also known to sling a pretty mean spear.  Aragorn is the name of her winged stallion.  Though Valkyrie has served with the Avengers, she is most known as a member of The Defenders.  Of course, Marvel is taking a different route with that team in live action.

If you are familiar with Thompson’s work, do you think she would make a good Valkyrie?

‘Thor: Ragnarok’ directed by Taika Waititi with a script by Christopher Yost and Craig Kyle stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo, Jaime Alexander, Tessa Thompson and maybe Cate Blanchett. It is set to ‘rok theaters on November 3, 2017.
