Thor Ragnarok Natalie Portman

Though it may be a rare occurrence, people have been known to come and go through the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Most notably, Terrance Howard vacated the role of Colonel James Rhodes AKA War Machine, which lead to Don Cheadle to step into the role for ‘Iron Man 2’. Also, Hugo Weaving famously stated that he wouldn’t want to reprise his role as the Red Skull. But now another actress has apparently departed the MCU (for now) and we have an idea about who will be replacing her.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Natalie Portman will not be a part of ‘Thor: Ragnarok‘. Although, this isn’t really a case of the actress leaving her character of Dr. Jane Foster behind. It has been said that the God of Thunder won’t be spending much time on Midgard in his third solo film, so it’s not that surprising that Jane won’t be along for the ride. In fact, many are presuming that neither Stellan Skarsgard’s Dr. Erik Selvig norKat Dennings’ Darcy Lewis will be involved either. So who will be the new female lead in the Thunderer’s Phase Three film? Word on the street is that Portman’s co-star from her next movie will be stepping in.

Tessa ThompsonSince making a splash in Hollywood with roles in films such as ‘Dear White People’, ‘Selma’, and ‘Creed’, Tessa Thompson has been getting plenty of attention around town. For her next project, she’ll join Natalie Portman, Oscar Isaac, and Gina Rodriuez in ‘Ex Machina’ director Alex Garland’s adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer’s novel ‘Annihilation’ for Paramount Pictures. But after that, she’s slated to join the MCU as the new female lead in Thor’s next adventure. Though not necessarily a romantic lead, the young actress is said to have a “key role” in the film. However, there are currently no details surrounding her role in Taika Waititi’s upcoming feature just yet. For all we know, Thompson could be the MCU’s version of Valkyrie. One thing is for sure though: She probably won’t be Thor Girl (not to be confused with the current Thor in the comics that some have taken to wrongly calling Lady Thor).

What do you think about Natalie Portman (and presumably Thor’s other Midgard-dwelling human friends) being left out of ‘Thor: Ragnarok’? And who do you think Tessa Thompson will be playing in the film? Share your thoughts and theories in the comments below.
