Back in 2012, we first heard that Paramount and Bad Robot would be producing the micro-budget sci-fi thriller ‘God Particle‘ from writer Oren Uziel and director Julian Onah. At the time, we only knew that the J.J. Abrams-produced film followed a team of American astronauts as they made a terrifying discovery about the fabric of reality. But after laying dormant for about four years, the movie was finally scheduled for a February 2017 release last month. And now we finally have some more information about the plot, as well as the first two cast members to join the production.
According to Variety, David Oyelowo and Gugu Mbatha-Raw are currently in negotiations to star in ‘God Particle’. After appearing in a number of films including ‘Interstellar’, ‘A Most Violent Year’, and ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’, as well as lending his voice to ‘Star Wars Rebels’, Oyelowo is probably best known for his critically acclaimed portrayal of Martin Luther King, Jr. in ‘Selma’. As for Mbatha-Raw, the actress has appeared in ‘Concussion’ alongside Will Smith and the upcoming live-action Disney adaptation of ‘Beauty and the Beast’. However, Whovians will recognize her as Martha Jones’ sister Tish.
In addition to this casting news, the announcement revealed a few more details about the plot. The report states that we’ll see “a team of astronauts on a mission who make a terrifying discovery that challenges all they know about the fabric of reality, as they desperately fight for survival.” But then when The Wrap shared their version of the news, they shared that the film “follows an American space station crew who, believing they have destroyed Earth via a Hadron accelerator, allow the crew of hostile nations to board their ship, with disastrous results.” Previously, we didn’t know that the astronauts had something to do with the Earth’s destruction, so now that interesting layer has been added to the proceedings.
