The Martian

Fans of Ridley Scott know that the man likes to make movies his own way, and that even when studio execs force him to make cuts and reduce the run-time of his films, he is always down to release a Director’s Cut of his film when they go to home video, so audiences can see the film the way he always intended it to be. This year’s film ‘The Martian,’ is no exception, and despite its many award nominations, huge box-office receipts, and great critical reception, we all know that there were pieces of the movie that Ridley would most likely be cutting back in for a Director’s Cut, and were surprised when the film came to DVD and BluRay in January, and there was no new cut.

Yet recent events have led us to believe that a new cut is indeed on its way! Titled ‘The Martian: Special Edition,’ the rumor came to us from employees over at The Digital Bits, who got the news from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. The new cut is rumored to come out in early June (an Australian retailer known as EzyDVD briefly listed the ‘Martian: Extended Cut’ on their site as being released on June 8th before taking it down), which leads us to believe that the Director’s Cut is indeed coming out very soon.

What are your thoughts on seeing a Director’s Cut on ‘The Martian?’ Do you think Scott is going to add something meaningful back into the already great story, or will it just be deleted scenes that no one minded being cut from the film? Share your opinions in the comments below!

Full synopsis below:

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, THE MARTIAN features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.
