When you think of Bryan Singer doing live action comic adaptations you might be thinking a big budget film but his next project is set to bring ‘Red Sonja‘ into your homes. That’s right, not only is Singer working in television but he is giving us an R-Rated take on one of the most iconic female warriors to ever grace print. Sure Wonder Woman might have more name recognition but if you are going for all out brutality that can match Conan the Barbarian in stature and genre then ‘Red Sonja’ is the only way to go! While a studio has not yet been officially attached to the project, we can tell you that with an R-rating the series is likely only set to end up on HBO, Showtime, Starz, Netflix, or Amazon.

I would like to throw out that my vote is for HBO as ‘Game of Thrones‘ has a limited run ahead of it and if the network wants to cash in on a darker fantasy series then this could be the perfect story to try and fill the shoes of their current ratings juggernaut.

It is unclear as to if this means the movie reboot which was being worked on by Nu Image/Millennium Film will still be moving forward or has been scrapped for the series.

Luke Liberman who owns the rights to ‘Red Sonja’ will be executive producing with Jason Taylor through Singer’s Bad Hat Harry production company. Singer is currently set to direct and will produce with Stephen L’Heureux’s Solipsist Films. No word is Singer is set to direct the entire series or just the first episode at this time but with the series being financed from TWC/Dimension and who is already attached I suspect we’ll be hearing on a full series pickup from one of the above networks in the near future.

Loosely based on the Robert E. Howard character Red Sonya of Rogatino she made her first appearance in book form in 1934 in the short Conan story ‘The Shadow of the Vulture’ and later in comics in 1975 when she appeared in ‘Conan the Barbarian’ #23. Since that time she has had a long stand alone and crossover history with the Cimmerian.

There is no word as to specifically which instance of the character this will be based upon but even if they don’t follow any of the previously created stories this is great news for fans of Red Sonja and fantasy alike.
