It’s being said that 2016 is the year of redemption, and one perfect example of that is Mattel and their DC Universe action figure offerings! Mattel has held the DC toy license for years, and while they have done some amazing stuff during that time, the line itself has definitely seen a severe drop off in the last couple of years with the end of the ‘DC Universe Classics’ toyline and the less than thrilling sales of their ‘Total Heroes’ and ‘Young Justice’ toylines. This year it looks like Mattel is stepping back into the DC Universe game and going full throttle with a ton of exciting new figure announcements and reveals from New York Toy Fair 2016! Here’s the full rundown…

Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice

Mattel showcased some of their newest 6″ scale figures from the upcoming ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice‘, which included some unexpected new additions! On hand were several figures that have already been released, like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Armored Batman.

There were also several new pieces from the film, including a new 6″ scale Aquaman and ‘Nightmare’ Batman! These are expected out sometime in the next few weeks, as the film is set to hit theaters next month!

 Suicide Squad

In a relatively unexpected move, Mattel has announced plans for a full series of figures based on this summer’s live action adaptation of ‘Suicide Squad’! So far only six figures have been revealed for this line, and two of them are The Joker, so there is a decent chance that we will see more figures based on the film closer to its release in late summer.

So far figures confirmed for this line include Deadshot, Katana, Killer Croc, Captain Boomerang, and two versions of The Joker (shirtless and with a coat!).It’s a little surprising that there isn’t a Harley Quinn figure in this lineup, but there are plenty of other characters missing here too so it’s likely we will see a second wave if these do well.

DC Comics Multiverse

Last year Mattel returned to the DC Universe with a short wave of 6″ figures dubbed ‘DC Comics Multiverse’. The line featured an interesting blend of figures based on characters from all of the DC comic book universe, as well as from several live action DC Entertainment television series! This year they’ve got quite a few new figures coming our way from this line, and once again it looks to be a healthy blend of both comics and live-action figures!

There were several figures from the wave released late last year on display, including Arrow and Flash from the CW series, plus a Joker figure based on his most recent design from Greg Capullo. Some of the brand new figures in the display include a Supergirl figure from the CBS series, plus a ‘Doomsday Gene’ Superman, ‘Dark Knight Returns’ Armored Batman and Mutant Leader figures, and a Doomsday build-a-figure!

Also inconspicuously hanging out in this assortment was what looks like a live action Jessie Eisenberg version of Lex Luthor from either ‘Batman v Superman’ or ‘Suicide Squad’. He is wearing an orange prison uniform and rocking the bald look that he hasn’t been seen sporting yet in any of the ‘BvS’ footage we’ve seen, so who knows where he’s coming from! It’s rumored that he will be turning up in ‘Suicide Squad’ in a minor role, so the prison uniform would certainly make sense. Either way, he looks great!

Mattel really looks like they’ve been listening to the fans and giving the people want they want with this years offerings! It’s great to see such a healthy variety of new DC Universe products coming our way!
